Wine in Alsace...
The valley of Kaysersberg in our beautiful area of Alsace invites you to discover types of vines with the wine designation of appellation d’origine contrôlée and labelled "Alsace Grand Cru" "Vendanges Tardives (Late grape harvest) "and" Sélection de Grains Nobles" (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot-Gray).
One can follow the road of the great vintages in Alsace from Sigolsheim to Katzenthal: Marckrain, Mambourg (which is one of the highest slopes in the plain of Alsace. It is a clay hill which dominates Sigolsheim), Schlossberg (at the bottom of the valley of Kaysersberg, next to the medieval ruins of the castle, is where the Schlossberg is located) Furstenturm (protected from the winds, it is the valley of Kaysersberg which welcomes this sunny slope. It is a little bit like the South with Mediterranean vegetation).
The slopes of Wineck-Schlossberg (located between 280 and 400 metres in altitude) are the vines of Katzenthal. Those of Florimont, Sommerberg and Kaefferkopf (head of a beetle: formerly passage of cockchafers), are on the slopes of Ammerschwihr.
The Wines of Alsace are always presented in their typical bottle known as "the flute of Alsace" elegant and with breeding. They are obligatorily bottled in the area of production pursuant to the regulation which is unique to them.
Riesling : regarded as one of the best white wines in the world, dry, with breeding, with a delicate fruity taste and the bouquet of a great finesse. It goes perfectly with fish, shellfish, seafood, white meats and sauerkraut.
Gewurztraminer : It is universally known. It is a vigorous wine, nicely full-bodied often served as an aperitif, or with desserts. But it goes down just as well with cheeses or a stronger flavour such as Roquefort, Munster or Pont-l'Evêque cheese.
Muscat of Alsace : It gives the delicious feeling of munching fresh grapes. It accompanies aperitifs and receptions with sparkle.
Pinot-Gris : Heady and vigorous, it likes foie gras, white meats, game and roasts.
Sylvaner : Dry and light, it goes beautifully with fish, shellfish and cold meats.
Pinot Blanc : This particular one is less known, because it is a more recent extension. It represents a happy medium in the range of Alsace wines and goes well with seafood or a country buffet.
Pinot Noir : Red or rosé wine. It goes with a lot of menu dishes: red meats and game, cold meats, goat's cheese, gruyere.
" Late grape harvests " and " Selections of noble grapes "
These two mentions comments, rare and prestigious, can supplement the appellations Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru, according to very strict criteria for type of vines such as: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat.
The "Late grape harvests" come from the above-mentioned types of vines collected in a state of over ripeness and late in the season.
The "Selections of noble grains" are obtained by successive sorting of grains affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea).
These wines are tasted at an ideal temperature of 8 to 10°C.
Visit to the cellars
Impossible to avoid in our valley!
The wine grower likes to share his passion for his soil and his know-how handed down from generation to generation. The visit to the cellars is a very always agreeable experience. Certain visits start by a tour of the vines. In the cellar the palate is aroused by the mellowness of wine often accompanied by a slice of Kougelhopf or bread with cheese.
